I
am a multimedia fiber and collage artist
and weaver. In addition to creating traditional
and contemporary basketry for over twenty-five
years, I have maintained a passion for
abstract art forms utilizing collage,
montage and assemblage techniques to express
the images I visualize. A life-long fascination
with art and art history has led to a
continuing exploration of various forms
of weaving, collage and related techniques.
Growing up in a small farming community,
surrounded by family, friends and neighbors
who were closely tied to the land and
its seasonal changes, I learned to value
the ability to make what was needed out
of what was at hand. These strong early
influences, together with a fascination
from childhood for color, form and texture,
helped create a love for fiber art, collage
and "found objects." In particular,
Celtic art, with its rich variety of shapes,
colors, and brave use of metals, along
with the vast array of colors and shapes
found in the natural world, have continually
kept me open to the challenges of creating
unusual articles rich in color, form and
texture. Over the years, experience at
the spinning wheel creating my own yarns,
at the loom, and in weaving baskets, has
taught me not to be afraid to mix various
types of materials, textures, and colors;
a lesson that has proven invaluable when
working in a variety of media. My work
includes large two-dimensional and three-dimensional
collage pieces, wearable art, Bohemian-inspired
jewelry & accessories, silk bowls,
one-of-a kind handcrafted bookmarks &
note cards, as well as traditional &
contemporary-inspired original basketry.
Exhibits include
a large "Wall of Baskets" at
the Duke Medical Center, three exhibits
at the Duke Eye Center, a two-month one-person
exhibit at Benjamin Winery & Vineyards
near Saxapahaw, NC. The Alamance Artisan
four-month exhibit at the Center for Creative
Leadership in Greensboro, NC and several
exhibits at the May Memorial Library,
Burlington, NC. My work is available at
the specialty shops of Solgarden and Antiques
& Accents in Mebane, NC, and at Iron
Gate Vineyards & Winery Gift Shop
near Mebane, NC. My work is also available
at selected fine craft & fine art
events throughout the year.
Like many of the
artists I greatly admire, I have spent
my creative life striving to be free from
barren traditions that often stifle creativity.
Because I believe everything and everyone
to be interconnected, I see my life as
part of a great weaving of connectedness
wherein the creative spirit is revealed
as I work. That creative spirit, with
all its infinite possibilities, is my
driving force, my strength and my inspiration.
Please
Note: I accept commissions and
will take orders for my work when it is
available. Please allow six to eight weeks
for special orders unless other arrangements
